Before heading out of Bakersfield on Day 10 of ’50 Miles in 50 Days,’ we wanted to explore the origins of the Bakersfield sound.
In 1954 Bud Hobbs recorded “Louisiana Swing” for MGM Records with the help of some session players from Bakersfield.
On lead guitar, a soon to be country music legend, Buck Owens, and Bill Woods on piano both contributed a sound different than the country music coming out of Nashville.
While “Louisiana” was in the song title, the sound was all Bakersfield and soon to be celebrated as an early form of alt-country.
