Before we talk beer and more importantly our free show at Peninsula Oktoberfest this coming Saturday (Oct. 23rd), here’s a quick history lesson.
Redwood City was once known as Mezesville. It’s true. Simon Mezes owned the land that was a base for the logging industry in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We’re talking the mid-1800’s.
He essentially forced folks who worked in the area, shipping lumber to a booming San Francisco, to pay for the lots they were living on. Many reluctantly did so, yet still called their community Redwood.
Eventually, they formally rejected a Mezesville government and forged ahead as Redwood City in the downtown’s Courthouse Square — the site of the first-ever Peninsula Oktoberfest.
Saturday afternoon (from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.) The Famous play Oktoberfest in the Square accompanied by beers from Devil’s Canyon, Gordon Biersch, Sierra Nevada and many more, plus all kinds of food.
It’s a celebration of all the things we love — friends, music, beer… and while we’re at it, the independence of Redwood City.
